All of these figure studies have been painted directly from life and are the culmination of many months
or years of work. I have no respect for any painter who works from photographs, as I can’t see any
creative purpose in it at all. Painting from life is not about realism or finish, but is a journey of discovery
and learning to see more deeply. This way of working is much more demanding on yourself and for the
models who have to sit still for ages. Great art usually comes out of profound struggle and the history of
art proves this again and again. All of these portraits formed part of my Youth Culture-Multi Culture Exhibitions.
